Profile: Fan Liu

When Fan Liu, Brescia’s new Coordinator for Student Life and Learning, began working at Brescia in January 2019, she knew she was joining a special community. Fan graduated from Western University, with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in 2016. After graduation, she explored and developed a passion working in the non-profit sector and supporting local youth. Today, as Fan continues to learn more about Brescia, she hopes to find that same passion working alongside Brescia’s faculty and staff in her role on campus.

How do you define leadership?

For me, a leader needs to be approachable and someone who can make an impact on others. While studying at Western University, I was fortunate enough to take a number of classes at Brescia, and to get a better sense of its leadership culture. In my second year, I had a leadership class with Professor Carlie Bell. I immediately saw her as an ideal leader; she was an intuitive and student-centered professor, who recognized I needed help in her class. Professor Bell’s approachable and thoughtful leadership helped to break down barriers for me to get out of my comfort zone, which has made a lasting impact on my life.

What are you passionate about?

I love to travel! Experiencing different cultures and meeting new people from around the world has always been a passion of mine. I have been lucky to visit many corners of the world, including the United Kingdom, where I did a one-year exchange program in 2015. I also traveled to Russia in 2013, where I completed an internship working at a children’s camp with AIESEC, a student-run non-profit organization.

What do you do in your spare time?

I am still a student and am working towards obtaining my Immigration Consultant Diploma online at Herzing College. Because of this, a lot of my spare time is dedicated to studying and course work. When I am not studying, you can find me doing yoga or spending time with friends.

What advice do you have for international Brescia students?

Embrace as much as you can; be open-minded; try new things and make new friends. From my experience, people are always willing to help, so just ask!

Why is mental wellness important for university students?

Whether you are studying, working or spending time with family, a mental illness can have an impact your day-to-day life. Students need to prioritize their health in order to be successful in their academics. My advice to maintaining mental wellness is to build a support system. One of the great things about Brescia is that there are plenty of resources and connections you can make to assist in creating that support system.

What does 100 years of Brescia mean to you?

Over its first 100 years, Brescia has established a unique leadership experience by breaking boundaries and providing countless opportunities for women. From my experience travelling internationally, I have seen first-hand that Brescia has set a strong example to the rest of the world by actively demonstrating equal rights between men and women.
