Alumnae Award Recipients

2019 Carmelle Murphy Alumnae Award of Distinction

Erin Rankin Nash ’84
Lawyer, Ferguson Patterson Law

As a young woman, Erin Rankin Nash, ’84 chose Brescia because of the sense of community offered by a smaller school. Years later she’s still part of that community, contributing her considerable talents and experience to ensure today’s students have the same rich experience.

Rankin Nash intended to go on to law school after her degree at Brescia, but life intervened. She became a passionate and tireless volunteer, providing leadership in organizations such as London Health Sciences Centre, St. Joseph’s Health Care London, the YMCA, Big Sisters of Canada and Participation House. Her volunteer work has been recognized by a variety of awards, including the Flare Award for volunteerism, the Jane Musset Award, the Queen’s Jubilee Medal and a YMCA Women of Excellence Award.

Eventually she went back to school, earned her LLB, and launched a successful career in law. Now, she serves as Chair of the Advancement Committee of Brescia’s Board of Trustees where she guides a group of committed volunteers in Brescia’s philanthropic efforts.

So why does Rankin Nash make time in her busy schedule to volunteer with Brescia? “It’s a very special place,” she says. “We should be doing all we can to help young women thrive, get the best educational experience they can, and provide them with the leadership skills to prepare them for whatever path they chose.”

2019 Sr. Mary Lou McKenzie Young Alumane Award of Merit

Elise Maiolino ’10
Advisor, Office of the Prime Minister of Canada

Elise Maiolino ’10 has had a passion for women’s issues and women’s leadership even prior to walking onto Brescia’s campus for the first time. Her professors still recall her distinct leadership style, one that included a natural desire for inclusivity.

Following her time at Brescia, Elise entered graduate studies at Western University and in 2011, completed a Master’s Degree in Women’s Studies and Feminist Research. In 2017, Elise successfully defended her PhD thesis in Sociology at the University of Toronto, where she focussed her research on gender and politics.

As a result of her scholarly research, she was offered the positions of Special Assistant and Advisor within the Office of the Prime Minister of Canada. Over the past two years, her work in the Prime Minister’s office has allowed her to learn and grow as a young professional working tirelessly towards the goal of creating a more inclusive and equitable society. Her contributions include working with the G7 Gender Equality Advisory Council and as a member of the delegation attending the United Nations General Assembly in the fall of 2018.

Elise served as Valedictorian for the Brescia Class of 2010 and included in her Baccalaureate speech the following words, “We are part of a community that weaves together the stories of generations of women who are leaders, who are not afraid to stand against the status quo, and who work to change our world for the better…” It is clear that Elise has done just that.
