Gifts of securities

ProfileScarf (3)Have you considered making a gift of securities? When you donate certain publicly traded securities “in kind” to a Canadian private foundation or a registered public charity, like Brescia University College, you are exempt from the payment of capital gains tax on any profit created by the fair market value of the donation.

Due to changes in the 2006 Federal Budget, you no longer pay tax on any of the capital gains realized. In the past, tax was payable on 25 per cent of the capital gains realized on the fair market value of the donated securities shares.

The easiest way to make a gift of securities is to have the shares electronically transferred from your account to Brescia’s account. The receipt value is for the closing trading price on the day that the shares are received into the account.
