About the Ontario Local Foods Nutrition Database®
This site is designed to provide consumers, students, educators and health professionals with nutrition information regarding local foods including generic nutrient analysis of one Food Guide Serving of each item in the database using the familiar Nutrition Facts Table. In addition, examples of possible Nutrition Claims are provided for each item.
The list of food items on this site features food items grown or raised in Ontario. All food items are arranged and colour-coded according to the food groups in Health Canada's Eating Well with Canada’s Food Guide. Nutritional analysis was performed on one ‘Food Guide Serving’ for each food item and examples of possible Nutrition Claims are also provided.
Below are some additional instructions and information to help you navigate around this site:
- Food items are arranged according to the food groups of Health Canada’s Eating Well with Canada’s Food Guide. To view what food items belong under each food group, click on the food group’s name badge: Vegetables and Fruit, Grain Products, Milk and Alternatives, Meat and Alternatives, Fats and Oils.
- To view the generic nutritional content and examples of possible Nutrition Claims for a specific food item, click on the food item’s name (e.g., Apple, Asparagus, etc…).
- Pictures on the database do not reflect the preparation methods of food items; they were included with the intention of providing a guide regarding the appearance of the food item.
