Brescia hosts 150 high school students at fifth annual International Day of the Girl celebration

London, ON – International Day of the Girl will be celebrated at Brescia University College on October 17th, bringing over 150 local high school students to campus for a half-day event. The day is tailored to raise awareness about the challenges and opportunities that girls and young women around the world face. It will feature artistic performances by students from the Nancy Campbell Worldcit Academy in Stratford and will also include interactive group sessions facilitated by Brescia’s Community Development students.
Brescia’s Principal, Dr. Susan Mumm says, “As Canada’s women’s university, we have a responsibility to not only educate and support girls and young women in our local community, but also to provide the opportunity and milieu to reflect and celebrate girls world-wide. We are honoured once again to be hosting International Day of the Girl, and know the experience will leave our guests and our own Brescia students feeling inspired and empowered.”
Students from the Nancy Campbell Worlcit Academy World Citizenship class will join members of the 1nes Project to provide the opening artistic presentation. The 1nes Project is an after-school program at the Nancy Campbell Worldcit Academy, which strives to use the Arts as a tool to raise awareness about important issues confronting today’s youth and inspire positive personal and social action in our communities. The performers will also participate in the small group discussions.
Students from the Thames Valley District School Board and London District Catholic School Board will be hosted at Brescia in the St. James Auditorium from 9:00 a.m. through 11:30 a.m. The event is designed to actively engage students in small group discussions around the theme of “Girls Inspiring Change.”
The United Nations declared October 11th, 2012 as the world’s first International Day of the Girl. Now entering its fifth year, Status of Women Canada has led the international community in adopting this day, along with Plan Canada.
