Brescia’s Just Own It Boot Camps Focus on Female Entrepreneurship

April 12, 2016
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

London, ON – Brescia University, recognizing the need to promote entrepreneurship to young women, is hosting three sessions of the Just Own It Boot Camps for female high school students interested in exploring entrepreneurship. Applications opened April 1st, 2016 and close April 29th, 2016. Students interested in applying must be nominated by a teacher or community member.

These free Boot Camps, hosted for the second year by the Women’s Entrepreneurship Initiative (WEI) at Brescia University College, are funded by the Government of Ontario.

The program will provide high school girls with the opportunity to be exposed to, explore, and experience entrepreneurship. Objectives of the Boot Camps include offering intensive hands-on training in five major areas of entrepreneurship: The Business Model, Customer Discovery, Product Prototyping, Financial Management, and Pitching an Idea. Students participating will stay in Brescia’s award-winning Clare Hall Residence, and all meals will be provided by Brescia’s food services team.

Camp directors, Associate Professors Colleen Sharen and Melissa Jean, are excited to organize the Boot Camps for a second year. Sharen explains, “Through Just Own It, young girls are able to explore entrepreneurship as a career choice, one where they can be creative, do something they love, and be prosperous.”

Research conducted during last year’s initial session demonstrates some very positive results. Jean says, “Last year, our programming resulted in a statistically significant change in both objective and self-perceived entrepreneurial knowledge for participants. We also found a statistically significant shift in entrepreneurial confidence for the campers.”

“Brescia has established an impressive track record in developing and delivering successful curricular and extracurricular experiential learning activities in entrepreneurship,” says Interim Principal, Dr. Donna Rogers. “We are thrilled to be hosting Brescia’s Just Own It Boot Camps for the second year, and look forward to welcoming the next generation of women entrepreneurs to campus.”

The Just Own It Boot Camps will be hosted at Brescia in three sessions:

Session ONE: May 25-29

Session TWO: June 1-5

Session THREE: June 8-12
