Showcasing the world at Brescia’s Cultural Festival

January 25, 2017
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

London, ON – On Thursday, January 26th, Brescia’s St. James Auditorium will be transformed into a world stage of song, dance, ethnic food, poetry and a fashion show of cultural attire in celebration of the 11th annual Cultural Festival.

“Brescia’s Cultural Festival is a wonderful opportunity to increase global awareness within our community, while also providing a venue for our students to share and celebrate their unique cultural traditions,” says International Program Co-ordinator Christina Lord. “Currently, Brescia’s international students represent 12% of our total student population. This event allows us to not only recognize and celebrate this distinct group, but to also hopefully increase general knowledge and break down any barriers and stereotypes.”

Building on the success of the previous year’s event, local vendors and restaurants will once again be generously donating a variety of global food. The Brescia Multicultural Club and CultureWorks: English as a Second Language School will host multiple displays that will showcase their work with the international community at Brescia, including song, dance and a head wrap demonstration. Members of London’s community will also be present, including a representative from hair salon Jennifer Naturals and the London Police Services. All proceeds raised through this year’s Festival will support Brescia’s Free the Children Club.

Fourth-year Brescia student Hibba Nawaz from Pakistan remarks on the impact of the annual event, stating, “The Cultural Festival is an amazing platform to display the diversity at Brescia and in London. The Festival is a lovely depiction of how although we are all culturally different, we are still similar as people.”

The Cultural Festival takes place on Thursday, January 26th, from 12:30 p.m. through 3:30 p.m. in Brescia’s St. James Auditorium. Admission is free. For more information on the event, please visit: brescia.uwo.ca/life/international-students/events/.
