Internationally acclaimed scholar and professional biographer Dr. Michael W. Higgins to deliver leadership lecture at Brescia

London, ON – On Thursday, October 25th, Brescia will welcome internationally acclaimed scholar and professional biographer, Dr. Michael W. Higgins to campus to present a special guest lecture open to the Brescia and London community. Dr. Higgins’ lecture, Henri Nouwen: Soul Friend, Icon of Wisdom and Compassion, will explore the topic of leadership through the lens of wisdom and compassion as evidenced in the life and writing of Henri Nouwen.

Currently serving as Distinguished Professor of Catholic Thought at Sacred Heart University in Connecticut, Dr. Michael W. Higgins’ diverse and accomplished résumé also includes: professional biographer; former senior academic administrator in Canada and the United States; contributing columnist for The Globe & Mail; Vatican Affairs expert for the CTV Network; CBC Radio documentarian and prolific scholar. Dr. Higgins is the author and/or editor of over a dozen books, including Genius Born of Anguish: The Life and Legacy of Henri Nouwen, which he authored as Nouwen’s official biographer.

Recognized as one of the most popular and influential spiritual writers of the late twentieth century, Henri Nouwen has reached millions through his books, lectures and workshops. Nouwen was known for his ability to look at people as living documents in a whole-person approach, which impacted wide audiences across religious, cultural and political spectrums. His books have been published in more than 28 languages and have sold over eight million copies worldwide. The considerable and personal influence of his writing has been publicly acknowledged by notables such as Kofi Annan and Hillary Rodham Clinton.

The evening lecture, Henri Nouwen: Soul Friend, Icon of Wisdom and Compassion will provide an in-depth exploration on the topic of leadership, while reflecting on Nouwen’s writing in relation to Brescia’s mission of leading with wisdom, justice and compassion. As a world experiencing a crisis in leadership, Dr. Higgins will engage members of the Brescia and London community on what it means to look at a whole-person approach to leadership.
