London, ON – A collaborative agreement has been finalized between Brescia University College and Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS), which allows students in Brescia’s accredited post-degree Diploma in Dietetic Education and Practical Training (DDEPT) to complete their year-long practical education at HHS, effective spring 2019.
“Brescia is delighted to collaborate with Hamilton Health Sciences in creating this professional experiential learning opportunity for students,” says Dr. Paula Dworatzek, Chair of the School of Food and Nutritional Sciences at Brescia. “Hamilton Health Sciences has a highly-regarded accredited dietetic practicum program that will be instrumental in developing the competencies our students need to become a Registered Dietitian.”
According to Kirsten Krull, Vice President Quality and Performance & Chief Nursing Executive, “Hamilton Health Sciences is pleased to have found a collaborator in dietetic education with Brescia University College: A collaborator who empowers people, fosters innovation, and enables a structure that reinforces responsiveness to local health priorities. We look forward to working together to enhance the experiential opportunities to graduate practice-ready Registered Dietitians with this novel approach to dietetic training.”
The collaboration will allow 12 Brescia students to complete their practical education at HHSC per academic year.
Brescia’s DDEPT program is a one-year professional, post-degree program. It combines Brescia’s academic courses with practical training in research, clinical, community and management settings to prepare students for a career as a Registered Dietitian.
HHS has 40 years of experience offering a highly regarded dietetic internship program. The collaboration with Brescia reinforces the hospital’s long term commitment to continue to offer exceptional dietetic learning experiences that are integrated with a high caliber post-undergraduate academic program. This collaboration will build on the excellent dietetic training provided at Hamilton Health Sciences and in the Hamilton community for the mutual benefit of the students, hospital sites, the University, patients, the broader community, and the dietetic profession. The collaboration will further enrich the learning experience for HHS preceptors and future students while maintaining responsiveness to local health priorities.
