Brescia University College announces rebirth of successful Girls LEAD camp in Barbados to begin July 2019

London, ON – Brescia University College in London Ontario, will re-launch the highly successful Girls LEAD camp in Barbados thanks to a three-year funding grant received for the camps from the University’s foundresses through the Ursuline Sisters Chatham Legacy Fund. Girls LEAD is a two-week summer day camp for girls who have completed either Form 3 or 4 of secondary school. The camp ran successfully for four consecutive year in Barbados when it was cancelled due to a lack of funding. The grant will allow the camp to begin in Barbados in summer 2019 and run through to 2021.
Brescia’s Principal, Dr. Susan Mumm, explains, “The Girls LEAD camp provided an opportunity for many of our students and some of our faculty to engage with students and alumnae in Barbados while aligning with Brescia’s mission and core values. The camp also provided the opportunity for us to work directly with the local community and corporate donors in Barbados. We look forward to re-engaging with these partners in the weeks and months to come.” Dr. Mumm goes on to say, “None of this would be possible without the ongoing support of our foundresses, the Ursuline Sisters of Chatham, Ontario of whom we are forever grateful to for creating this lasting legacy.”
Christina Lord, Brescia’s International Student Program Coordinator, visited a number of secondary schools the last week of January in Barbados where she shared nomination packages. The camp will be capped at 30 students, with nominations due on March 22. To nominate a student to attend Girls LEAD, please visit: http://bresica.uwo.ca/girlslead/barbados. Each Secondary School may nominate up to three girls and nominations must be submitted by a school Principal, Guidance Counselor or Administrator.
Girls LEAD camp includes a series of confidence-building activities led by Brescia faculty, staff and counsellors. In previous years campers have also enjoyed cooking healthy meals together, interactive activities, and sharing their culture with the counsellors (who are current Brescia students). The learned skills have enabled girls to be confident in themselves and have contributed to allowing them take on new challenges and “choose to lead”.
The Student Centre in Barbados will also play an integral role with the facilitation and organization.
