March 3, 2020
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

London, ON – In celebration of International Women’s Day, Brescia University College will host the third annual Dr. Hanycz Leadership Lecture on Thursday, March 5th, 2020. This inspirational evening will feature Brescia’s third Chancellor, Maude Barlow, a thought-provoking change-maker, women’s activist, environmentalist and award-winning Canadian author.

During Maude’s keynote address, she will speak to her personal journey with the women’s movement, weaving in her advocacy work related to the human right to access clean water and the Blue Communities Project – themes outlined in her newest book, Whose Water Is It, Anyway? Taking water protection into public hands.

From 2008 to 2009, Maude served as Senior Advisor on Water to the 63rd President of the United Nations General Assembly and was a leader in the campaign to have water recognized as a human right by the UN. Maude is a recipient of 14 honorary doctorates and many awards including: the 2005 Right Livelihood Award (known as the “Alternative Nobel”), the 2005 Lannan Foundation Cultural Freedom Fellowship Award, the Citation of Lifetime Achievement at the 2008 Canadian Environment Awards, the 2009 Earth Day Canada Outstanding Environmental Achievement Award, the 2009 Planet in Focus Eco Hero Award, and the 2011 EarthCare Award, the highest international honour of the Sierra Club (US).

The Dr. Hanycz Leadership Lecture was created and funded by donors in 2015 to honour Brescia’s 11th Principal, Dr. Colleen Hanycz. The annual lecture is designed to bring outstanding leaders to Brescia to share their knowledge and experience with the community to inspire women leaders of the future.

Media and members of the London community are invited to attend A Personal Journey – An Evening with Maude Barlow, taking place at Brescia’s Mother St. James Building Auditorium on Thursday, March 5th, 2020 at 6:30 p.m. Admission and parking are complimentary.
