Special Topics in Educations Psychology

Course Description: This course will cover selected topics of current interest in Educational Psychology. Both research and theory, and their implications for educational practice, will be discussed in this seminar-format course. The course will include an optional trip to Cape Town to work with The Girl Impact.

Cape Town, South Africa:

You will explore:

  • Educational History of South Africa, Decolonializing Education
  • From Apartheid to Emancipation: A walking tour of Cape Town
  • Sonabile Project: confidence, learning, and self-expression through art
  • Grandmothers Against Poverty and Aids (GAPA): a safe afterschool space for children providing educational and creative workshops
  • Visit two schools, including the first girls only school in the townships
  • Community Centre in Yanga township (Guga S’Thebe Centre)
  • The University of Cape Town
  • Meeting with Michelle Procter, the architect of The Girl Impact and its 6 pillars

Expenses:

  • Accommodation and Excursions: $2500 CDN
  • Health Insurance - $150 CDN
  • Flights (to and from Cape Town) - $1,800 CDN return (includes transfers through Toronto)
  • Total expected cost = $4,450
  • Please note, all students participating must also provide a valid police check for working with vulnerable populations. All costs are estimates and may be subject to change. Additionally, this course has limited enrolment. Students will be placed on a waiting list in the event of over-enrolment.
