Citing is a very important part of the academic writing process. For assistance with referencing and citations, the library staff at the Beryl Ivey Library have created quick-reference guides for the major styles used at Brescia.

Please note that specialized citations, formatting, and style questions should still be directed toward to manual for each specific style.

The American Psychological Association (APA) citation style is commonly used in the social sciences. The Brescia APA Citation Guide will give you a basic introduction to in-text citations and references in APA style.

Please note: there are currently two editions of APA available. Please check with your instructor about which edition of APA they require for assignments.

The Chicago Style is commonly used in the social sciences. The Brescia Chicago Citation Guide will give you a basic introduction to in-text citations and referencing in Chicago style. The Chicago Manual of Style requires either (1) footnotes and a bibliography or (2) in-text author-date citations and a reference list. Our citation guide shows examples for footnotes and a bibliography. You can find examples for option (2) in the Chicago Manual of Style.

The Council of Science Editors (CSE) and National Library of Medicine (NLM) styles are commonly used in the sciences. This style is also used in the Journal of Food Science. The Brescia CSE/NLM Citation Guide will give you a basic introduction to in-text citations and referencing in CSE/NLM style. Our guide follows the Name-Year format, which corresponds with the format used in the Journal of Food Science.

The ICMJE Recommendations is commonly used in the sciences. This style was previously known as the Uniform Requirements or Vancouver style. The ICMJE (International Committee of Medical Journal Editors) publishes the Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing, and Publication of Scholarly Work in Medical Journals.
