What is the Preliminary Year Program?

  • A foundation year opportunity for women and men that provides students with everything they need to transition into post-secondary studies.
  • An opportunity to complete first-year university admission requirements and learn the skills you will need to succeed in university: essay writing, taking lecture notes, writing examinations, etc.
  • Students are enrolled in 5 credit courses per term for two terms (total of 10 courses). All Preliminary Year students are also required to enroll in a non-credit Interdisciplinary Studies course.
  • Students gain valuable foundational academic programming in either a Science or Arts and Social Sciences focused stream.

Who is the Preliminary Year Program For?

For students who may not yet be sure of their pathway, this program allows students the opportunity to explore their options in a university setting while completing credits they will need to apply to a post-secondary institution.

Brescia's Preliminary Year Program gives options to students who:

  • May want to upgrade some of their high school level courses.
  • Are feeling they aren't quite ready to start university, but are ready for a new learning environment outside of high school.

How is the Preliminary Year Program Taught?

The early points of your post-secondary journey can be some of the most exciting and empowering times of your life. They can also be challenging as you transition to a different depth of learning than you experienced in high school. The faculty and staff at Brescia are here to support you every step of the way. We will meet you where you are at as a student and support you to get you to where you want to be.

  • Brescia offers small class sizes with an 11:1 student to faculty ratio
  • Taught by university professors on the Brescia campus
  • Course requirements and teaching styles are equivalent to university-level programs

What Skills do Students Receive?
