English Language Proficiency

Students in Fall

English Proficiency Tests

Students admitted to Brescia University College must be proficient in written and spoken English. Applicants for whom English is not their first language and who have not lived or studied in an English environment will be required to write one of the tests listed below. Students who can demonstrate English proficiency may have the requirements waived. To do so, please complete and submit the Toefl waiver form.

You are encouraged to write a test at the earliest possible date for early admissions consideration. Scores for any test written before January 1, 2012 may not be accepted.

The Undergraduate Admissions Office may require any applicant to write a test of English Proficiency. If your first language is not English, you will be required to write one of the following five acceptable English Proficiency Tests:

1.TOEFL Internet-based (iBT), Paper-based (PBT), and the TWE

The minimum score required on the TOEFL is 550 on the paper-based test with a 5 on the TWE, and 83 on the internet-based tests with no score below 20.

Western's/Brescia's Institution Code for TOEFL is 0984. Please leave the department code blank.

2. MELAB

A minimum overall score of 80 is required with no score less than 78.

3. IELTS International

A minimum overall band score of 6.5 is required with no part less than 6.0.

4. CanTEST

The CanTEST is managed by the University of Ottawa and is offered in various provinces within Canada.

A minimum overall score of 4.0 is required with no part less than 4.0.

5. CAEL

The Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL) is managed through Carleton University and is offered in various countries internationally.

A minimum overall score of 60 is required with no part less than 60.

For students requiring ESL instruction

CultureWorks Preparatory English Language Program for Admission

Fanshawe CollegeBrescia will accept successful completion of the CultureWorks English Language program (High Advanced Level) as an alternative English Language Proficiency requirement. CultureWorks is located on the Brescia campus and utilizes classes and facilities. A joint application for ESL and degree programs at Brescia can be submitted directly through CultureWorks.

Fanshawe College ESL Program

Culture WorksBrescia will accept completion of the Fanshawe ESL program as proof of english language proficiency. Applications must be made through Fanshawe to be assessed for admission prior to completing the Fanshawe program. Students are required to receive A's in all three components of Level Five of the program to meet the english language proficiency requirements to Brescia.
