Brescia brings Girls LEAD day camp back to Barbados for a second year

Bridgetown, Barbados – Last summer 22 Barbadian primary school students had the opportunity to participate in Brescia University College’s two-week Girls LEAD summer camp. The camp, which was met with extremely positive feedback, will be reprised in Barbados in July 2011, this time with three Brescia students – all of whom hail from Barbados — at the helm. Co-ordinating the whole enterprise will be Christina Lord, International Program Co-ordinator for Brescia University College.

Girls LEAD International will run in Barbados from July 4-8, and July 11-16. The camp will be held at Ursuline Convent School again this year. “Last year the Ursuline Convent School administration and custodial staff were so supportive that there was no question that we would want to partner with them again this year,” says Christina Lord. “Ursuline Convent School is a great facility. It is very open and spacious. Access to their food lab also allowed campers to prepare daily lunches and test out foods they had never tried before. Luckily the school welcomed us back again this summer.” Brescia has also maintained positive relationships with local merchants such as Laurie Dash, from whom Brescia will purchase most camp supplies again this year.

Daily cooking workshops, which promote physical and mental health, are just one component of the camp’s three streams. Camp counsellors have also created a curriculum that centres around enhancing self-awareness, building self-confidence, and connecting with others.

Developing leadership potential is a priority at Brescia University College – Canada’s only women’s university. “We at Brescia believe that leadership isn’t a quality you’re born with or something that you spontaneously develop. Leadership is a choice. Brescia’s Girls LEAD International day camp gives young women the opportunity to explore their own leadership potential in a positive and empowering environment,” explains Brescia Principal, Colleen Hanycz. “I am so pleased to think that another group of young women will have the opportunity to develop their leadership abilities from Brescia students. We selected three Brescia students to be Girls LEAD counsellors. Not only are these students – Amanda Cox, Rosette Moore, and Melissa Leacock – natural leaders but they are also all natives of Barbados. I think they’ll bring a lot of experience to the role and of course a unique knowledge of the island and the culture.”

The teachings from this two-week day camp will culminate in an Open House on July 16. Campers will put their leadership skills to the test by organizing an entire showcase featuring dances, songs, and dramatic skits. Says Principal Hanycz, “The Open House is a truly a remarkable day. The campers feel a sense of accomplishment and pride showcasing all they’ve learned, and camp sponsors, parents, and Brescia alumnae have the chance to see, first hand, how relevant this camp is.”

Students will be selected for Girls LEAD International based on their 11-plus/Common Entrance Exam scores, in a process facilitated by the Ministry of Education.

Brescia University College would like to thank this year’s generous sponsors: Summit International Bank; Barbados National Bank (BNB); and Trident Insurance Company Ltd.
