150 high school students and teachers to analyze gender privilege and discrimination at Brescia’s seventh annual International Day of the Girl event

London, ON – In recognition of the United Nations International Day of the Girl, on Thursday, October 18th, Brescia will welcome close to 150 students and teachers from the London area to campus for the University’s seventh annual celebration. Designed to raise awareness around the challenges and opportunities presented to girls around the world, the half-day event will feature a special performance by students from Nancy Campbell Academy in Stratford and will also include interactive group sessions facilitated by Brescia’s Community Development students.
Since its establishment in 2012, International Day of the Girl has been an important celebration at Brescia University College. Following the success of previous years, students from the Nancy Campbell Academy will return to Brescia to provide the opening artistic presentation. Using dance, poem and music, Nancy Campbell students will raise awareness about important issues confronting today’s youth and inspire positive personal and social action in our communities. The performers will also participate in the small group discussions.
Students and teachers from across the Thames Valley District School Board and London District Catholic School Board will be hosted at Brescia in the St. James Auditorium from 9:00 a.m. through 11:30 a.m. The event is designed to actively engage students and empower their voices through small group discussions, exploring the topics of privilege, power and discrimination.
The United Nations declared October 11th, 2012 as the world’s first International Day of the Girl. Now in its seventh year, International Day of the Girl is designed to promote girls’ empowerment, while highlighting and addressing the needs and challenges girls face across the globe.
